Tracked this down.  Timo: yes, "vesa" was being used because
autodetection was failing.  Autodetection was failing because
"discover1" (which does the actual PCI-ID matching) was not installed.

This is strange given that:
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/src/tree/ubuntu.feisty$ grep -r discover1 .
  ./ship: * discover1
  ./live: * discover1    # for X autoconfiguration

so this should be installed by default.
