I think the point has been made. Andrea Cimitan of the Canonical Design Team has stated in blog comments "Who said this is the default wallpaper? A new blog post about future wallpapers and design decisions will follow next week." [1]
In other words, everyone is kicking up a big fuss over nothing, this is not going to be the final wallpaper, keep an eye on the Canonical Design blog.
