Sorry, it doesn't work. I followed the instructions very carefully. I purged the alsa-base and pulseaudio programs then installed the backports module for alsa as suggested. After the backports modules were installed I got sound from everything, but I couldn't record and the Sound function didn't work under Preferences. When I reinstalled alsa-base and pulseaudio I only got sound from Gnome desktop functions and there was no sound from Rhythmbox or other applications with audio. I just think this release (10.04) is crap and not enough testing was done before the release. I've wasted too much time messing about on this problem when I could have done something else more useful. Very disappointed to be honest. Going back to 9.10 now.
