A description of the method by which one would accomplish a patch to
allow this through gconf settings is available in the upstream bug for
the curious. It is unlikely that Ubuntu would change the default
behaviour, as the GECOS name of the user is already available through
GDM by default (and getting to GDM is trivial if one has physical
control of the device). That said, coordinated changes in default
behaviours from upstream may well be absorbed in Ubuntu.
