I don't know if it was a gdm problem. It might have been a kernel problem.
With a new kernel version, the problem was alleviated,
but still a problem remained with Seamonkey browser.
After selecting an URL an pressing ENTER would still log out.

With manual login, pressing ENTER first used to make the screen image
disappear and reappear (the login screen).
The problem was only on a 32 bit machine.
