In the meantime I solved the sound problem on the HP Pavilion dv7 -
problems with levels of alsamixer being down (maybe Skype modified them)
and some output settings wrong (guess they have been changed by
accident).

Then I tried Ubuntu 10.10 beta from an USB stick and did not recognized
the crackling sound any more (booted two times). So there is a good
chance that the issue would be gone with 10.10. Would be cool if this
could be fixed for 10.04 also because that workstation is being kept on
LTS versions only.

But for being sure would be cool if other people experiencing this could
also try with a 10.10 live CD and confirm.
