I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried:

 * ath9k driver shiped with the kernel
 * compat-wireless from linux-backports
 * compat-wireless from linuxwireless.org (stable and bleeding edge snapshot)

and I've the same problem with each one, poor strength signal (more than
5 o 6 meters, it starts disconnecting frequently, terrible annoying),
and also, disconnects on high network load (streaming HD over youtube
for example).

Also, with the new kernel
 * kernel 2.6.35 (from maverick - Ubuntu kernel team PPA)
 * compat-wireless (from backports and linuxwireless.org)
the sitatuion were WORST!

Actually I'm using Ndiswrapper, it works much better and much reliable,
but sucks to use ndiswrapper instead of native ones.
