The bad stack trace may be down to /usr/bin/gnome-video-thumbnailer being a symlink to /etc/alternatives/gnome-video-thumbnailer which is a symlink to /usr/bin/totem-video-thumbnailer . Running gdb --core=CoreDump /usr/bin/totem-video-thumbnailer still gives a strange backtrace though (totem-gstreamer-dbgsym 2.18.0-0ubuntu2 is installed).
