Hi David, I am not able to install anything nor set things right from the terminal. (A lot of error messages). The Synaptic Package Manager & the Ubuntu Software Center are not working.
The simplest solution I think is to reinstall 10.10 which I will have to do later due to time & broadband constraints. Thanks for your help.
