To All, As an experiment, I have adjusted the positions of the panel applets to leave some space between them and then added separators. After a few days, I have not seen any visual corruption. However, as this is an intermittent problem, I can't be sure that these changes have actually made any difference.
If anyone else would like to try this, it might be useful to see if this could be an easy work-around.
