I just experimented with a few different kernel versions, older and
newer, from the mainline builds and from Karmic. Turns out that I get
the problems described above with all kernels > 2.6.32 I tried.

The youngest kernel I found where everything works properly is linux-
image-2.6.31-22-generic, which I got from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/linux-image-2.6.31-22-generic.

With linux-image-2.6.32-020632-generic from mainline the UI for entering
the HD encryption key doesn't appear (just the framebuffer console with
a lonely blinking cursor), but I can enter the key and later the display
works fine.

Starting from 2.6.32-02063201 the screen stays completely dark. The key
can be entered and the OS itself seems to boot, but the display stays
black. I can do a clean reboot with Ctrl-Alt-Del.

>From some point on (or depending on the build, I don't know what the
differences between the various mainline builds are), the UI is shown,
but the display turns on and off.

In all versions, the problems can be worked around by booting with "nomodeset"
("vga=normal" isn't even necessary). If I do that, the display doesn't blink
and sleep mode works.

For reference, here are the notes I took during testing:

linux-image-2.6.31-11-rt - OK - Lucid
