Sorry for the delay in answering, I finally managed to install the first beta of Ubuntu 10.10 (with usb-modeswitch already installed) and usb-modem autodetection seems to work well on my laptop. Curiously, on a (quite old) desktop of mine it seems I have to plug the key *before* booting the OS, or the problem above reappears... but maybe it's something unrelated with the OS (I'll check). So thanks for now and, should some problem come out, I'll make a report. Regards.
