It may have been too early to mark this invalid. Yesterday I did a clean
install (although later restored my old home folder) of Maverick beta,
and a moment ago I noticed that my left speaker is now dead, just like
in this bug description. This is not a hardware issue, because
everything worked fine in 10.04.

Moving the balance slider in sound preferences in either direction only
lowers the volume slightly, so it sounds as if both stereo channels are
mixed into a single mono channel, which is then fed to the right-side
speaker only.

I've tried rebooting, deleting my .pulse folder and whatnot, but the
problem remains.

My sound chip is not VIA, but Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD
Audio Controller (rev 03), so this might be a more generic issue.
