Doh... It appears to hang while checking filesystem.squashfs. In one of the virtual consoles, it spitting out "Buffer I/O error on device hdc" messages. My apologies. I had run this before, but walked away (it takes a while to run), and when I came back, it had booted into the live installer. At the time I thought that it must have continued after a successful check, but now I realize that it must have *re*booted.
