What I forgot to mention: before I installed the alsa backport packages the microphone wasn't working either.
I also tested the microphone functionality with the 2.6.32-23 and 2.6.32-22 kernel that I have installed in parallel. For these I didn't install the alsa backport modules. However, even under these kernel versions the microphones don't work.
