Jeremy, in the meantime, I had installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a test because 10.04 wasn't usable for me due to the mentioned bug above. With the current development version of Ubuntu 10.10 there are no kernel panics anymore. (However, the system sometimes has difficulties to recognize the external display during boot and the Fn-F8 behaviour (producing super-p) reported elsewhere is a nuisance.)
As linux-2.6.35-22 doesn't show my reported error anymore, I don't know what to do with the "needs-upstream-testing" flag.
