I didn't do anything with upstream kernels, but the hotkeys just magically started working. My system updated itself a couple of days ago, I think? The brightness applet still doesn't work. Also, adjusting the brightness in GRUB used to not work (brightness would jump back up to full) but now it does. Unless the devs want more info to see what exactly is happening, I'm content to let this bug go.
