As an additional comment, this happens on both an externally powered
Freecom 500 Gb external USB drive that is identified in
/var/log/messages as SAMSUNG HD501LJ which is formatted to EXT-3, and a
USB-powered WD My Passport 140 GB drive that is identified as WD
1600BEA External 1.04 in /var/log/messages which is formatted to NTFS.
The most recent disconnection that I have observed was when I was
playing mp3s using mpd with the Freecom 500 Gb drive. The relevant
portion of /var/log/messages concerning the disconnection is reproduced
below. Scanning the drive with gparted reveals that there are no
problems with it. Please let me know if there is anything that I can do
to help identify this bug.
