Well done + thanks for figuring this out. I thought of that possibility just as I saw the email notification of your update :-). I've done this several times, but usually I see a more explicit error about missing (XUL?) files.
I tend to use aptitude instead of the GUI, so I think I would have missed the notification that handles this... although if so, that's annoyingly inconsistent.
