Do you really have problems in reading the menuitems, even in the latest branch? I don't have any problems with them, while making them bright will expose a "blur" problem (the shadow is 1px and brighter than the menu bg, the text is brighter then bg, resulting in a blurred font at the bottom, as in Dust).
