strange. i almost thought my harddisk was crashing on me, since the problems i had begun to affect my windows too. even when i used a CD with ubuntu 6.06 it reported I/O errors. i was sort of beginning to suspect that something had gone physically wrong with the drive (earlier i have heard that "clicking sound" from the harddrive that people here have reported). anyways after some tinkering the problems just vanished for no apparent reason.
i've tried the following: - deleting /boot/grub/menu.lst, changing hda->sda in /boot/grub/device.map, and running update-grub - restoring BIOS defaults (!) - removing some strange SCSI PNP devices from windows xp device manager. - running update-initramfs -u at some point it just started working again. if i should make wild guesses about what happened i'd have to say it could have been a NVRAM misconfiguration (BIOS) or somehow the drive must have been put in a state which it had problems recovering from. the fact that i got some strange error messages from grub also reinforces this belief. -- Extremely Slow boot up PATA disk detected as sda https://launchpad.net/bugs/94981 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
