Back when I used to use Karmic, I switched to the Dust theme and then
began experiencing this bug with the corrupted icons. I'm not sure if
it was because of the theme engine used in the Dust theme, or because of
my setting of a background image on the panel (/usr/share/themes/Dust
/panel-background.png).

Ambiance uses a panel background image, but Clearlooks does not. So, I
will be running my laptop with the Clearlooks theme combined with
Ambiance's panel background image
(/usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/panel_bg.png) and see what happens.

Unfortunately, changing Ambiance's panel to use a solid color at 100%
opacity doesn't seem to work--there are still elements of the background
image present behind the menus and icons. Otherwise, this would seem
like a logical test to try.

I'll post back with the results.
