@madbiologist: Sigh, today, after updating to latest daily, no sound. A dialog says 'Waiting for Sound System to respond" (transl.) and nothing; a coffee and still nothing.
I've run through http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 and then apt-get update/upgrade. No change.
