I have the same problem. 1. set workspace number to 4, 2. enable desktop effects (1 option disabled, 2 enable) 3. number of workspace was decrease to 1. 4. set workspace number to 4, 5. disable desktop effects 6. number of workspace back to 4. 7. enable desktop effects. 8. number of workspace was decrease to 1 (but switch area is wide). 9. Set workspace number to 4, 10. Workspace as cube works ok now.
