I installed the 9/28 daily build of Maverick Meerkat with 2.6.35-22-generic, and this problem appears resolved. My machine has been up for well over twenty-four hours at 54 mbit. Thanks to the developers for fixing this problem. Let's hope it doesn't rear its ugly head again.
