I think it IS a bug after all. I have the same hardware and it happens to me on 9.10 and 2.6.31-22 (yes, I know it is not up to date, but still).
Interestingly enough, it depends on the USB slot I connect the reader to. Very consistently it reports "write protect is on" for one slot and "write protect is off" for another slot with the same SD card (I don't even remove it).
