I have the same problem. What I can add is that the slowness comes from the HDD working on "something"
I managed to open gnome-system-monitor, and I saw that the system was using huge amounts of memory: 1.5 GB of RAM and 1.1 GB of swap. The computer was slow as when you are copying files.
