I found that the quality/cleanliness of the install CD is quite critical. I had several failed wubi installs with various problems. I looked at the disk and it had a few finger prints on it, no scratches. Once I cleaned it with one of those CD cleaners, the install went without a hitch. I guess cleanliness IS next to Ubuntuness (or Wubiness).
