Public bug reported:

I just installed Maverick 10.10 AMD64 Desktop. After the first boot
everything looked great.

I then setup my typical environment, which basically includes installing
a bunch of packages. I didn't change any Appearance options at all.
After rebooting, my theme is now a very boring and ugly one (I believe
the Gnome default). I cannot change it back to Ambiance in Appearance
settings. If I create a new non-admin user, he has Ambiance. If I
create an admin user, he has the crappy theme.

I'd be happy to provide more information or try anything to make my
desktop less ugly.
