This appears to still be a work in progress - but it is in progress, so hopefully we see a fix soon. As for the auto-hide, that was mentioned a month or more ago during testing, and it's been wish-listed for the next version (11.04). The Mutter crashes were a lot more frequent before, so this bug has been at least partly fixed. The remaining trouble-makers seem to be programs like Firefox and Thunderbird that don't have their menus in the top panel. Right now the crashes do not happen every time, although they do seem to be more likely when there are multiple windows open.
