Fixes did not work - Still no sound

1. Downloaded Ubuntu 10.10. Placed on CD and ran. No Sound
2. For fun installed 10.10. Since I expected 10.10 when I downloaded Saturday
and got 10.4, thought
I may as well install. This obviously a new install. But, still no sound
3.Updated drivers as described below - No Sound.
4. Removed modem. It had a sound device - Unimodem half duplex audio device -
and I feared sound was
being poured out the modem. No Help No Sound.

In all cases there were system power downs and many reboots. but no success. Is
here something I
should do to tell the system to realign drivers so we are sure they are
pointing to the right place?
Any other ideas ... Thanks
