I just figured out how to install the new kernel

I'm now running  2.6.36-020636rc7-generic #201010070908 SMP Thu Oct 7
10:21:05 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux


Computer no longer crashes with the external monitor, but, still unable to get 
1440x900 resolution.

current xorg.conf is as follows
