You can reach a console on ttys 1-6 by typing <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<F1> through -<F6>. X generally runs on tty 7, so you can get back there by doing <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<F7>; however, when X isn't running due to config problems, the gdm restart will, in general, automatically throw you into the tty X will use.
I will assume that this solves your problem, and close out the bug. If you feel that I have not fully addressed your issue, please do feel free to reopen this bug. Also, it might be worthwhile issuing a more general bug along the lines of "Ubuntu needs more user-friendly handling in cases of X failure", to address a potential "bug" that the current method for dealing with the circumstance may be insufficiently user friendly. :-) ** Changed in: Ubuntu Status: Unconfirmed => Rejected -- X server crash doesn't fall back to console https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/102719 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
