I have yet to try your new instructions. However I did want you to know that I re-installed Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Beta and was able to easily reproduce the problem. I also then installed Ubuntu Dapper Drake and also reproduced the problem as well. I am thinking it has something to do with Gnome. I then installed Xubuntu Dapper Drake and it worked wonderfully. I will keep you posted in regards to your instructions.
