Sorry, I figured out what the problem was after I read all th posts. I deleted /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA/RT2870STA.dat (which was created by installing the proprietary driver) and then the default Ubuntu driver worked in all cases. I maybe should have done a "make uninstall" when I decided to revert to the Ubuntu driver
