oops--I just realized that Totem was MUTED when I did the test with my cm8738. I just hibernated and resumed and sound seems to be working.
I didn't use my onboard sound card (cm8738) in previous releases of Ubuntu (like dapper, breezy, etc., which is the time this bug is from).
