Same issue on 32-bit Maverick, fresh install. Once I also enabled the MPRIS extension the sound menu buttons then work. Suggestion: either add a note in the description for either / both plugins that they require the other one in order to work, or just default the MPRIS on. It's not clear what it does for the average user.
