You need to click on a clip before clicking the split button or using
the S key. Or are you telling me this doesn't work?
About the render problem: this should be a separate bug report. In that
bug report, please provide instructions to reproduce it, what kind of
clips you used (with transitions? with still images?), if you get any
errors in the terminal, etc.
