I've tried the volume level trick already, it didn't work, even using alsamixer to make sure it wasn't a hidden one. Muting the master doesn't even effect it. I grepped for all kernel modules with snd and put them all into the black list file. that stopped it loading the driver and killed off the hiss. Not ideal obviously.
