Oops. I should really have checked my instructions, rather than relying
on memory. I was using synaptic package manager at the same time

Try these steps.

1) Start update-manager, and minimize it.
2) Start synaptic package manager, and minimize it
3) Click on update-manager's icon in the taskbar, update-manager will restore 
its window
4) Click on the "Check" button, a dialog box warning 
   "There is another synaptic running in interactive mode. Please close it 
first"
   will be displayed
5) Close this dialog; synapic will be restored.
6) Close synaptic
7) Minimize the update-manager again.
8) Run a second instance of update-manager

Hopefully, the first instance won't be restored.
