I had this issue some months ago with 10.04 and I came across this
thread. I followed the steps above to blacklist rt2800usb and then
installed the backports compat wireless package and things worked fine.

Today, I upgraded to 10.10 and it all fell apart again. I made sure I
had the correct backports package, tried both with and without
blacklisting rt2800usb, still won't work. Interestingly, NetworkManager
does actually detect the device and does detect various access points -
but is just unable to connect to any of them.

Has anyone tried this with 10.10?
