#2 Have you installed a fresh copy of Kubuntu 10.10? This problem happens on am3-machine (Radeon 4670) - and laptop x100e (Radeon 3200). There is nothing indicating anything hardware related. (X simply does not restart. CTRL+ALT+F1 works)
Starting X (it is not running - I have also verified this with ps -A | grep -i X) and logging in/out probably shows a reason for the problem.
