I have the same problem on Acer Ferrari One 200 running ubuntu 10.10 x86_64.
But, the mic is working flawlessly when I run live-usb 10.10 i386 (32 bit). So, I guess there is a problem with the 64 bit version, either the alsa or pulseaudio (I am not sure). I won't switch to 32 bit kernel, since I won't get the optimal power of my machine. And I hope that there is somebody can fix this problem. @Luke: there is no "acer" model in ALC272 section.
