Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpackagekit

KPackageKit 0.6.2, 64-bit Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick, KDE 4.5.1

Using KPackageKit I installed one or more packages including at least
alsa-tools, and at
 Installing 37%
the following error dialog appeared:

Package failed to install - KPackageKit
One of the selected packages failed to install correctly.
More information is available in the detailed report
 Details >>
subpocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

This isn't at all helpful. *Which* package failed to install? *What*
post-installation script was running? Surely if code is able to detect
the error exit status then it should know what package it is installing
and what it has invoked! All this tells me is something somewhere went
wrong some way.

I looked in /var/log/dpkg.log and it ends with
  2010-10-23 18:00:33 status half-configured alsa-tools 1.0.23-3ubuntu1
  2010-10-23 18:00:33 status installed alsa-tools 1.0.23-3ubuntu1
does that mean alsa-tools failed to install? But after I dismissed the alert,
KPackageKit redisplayed and showed it had installed alsa-tools. So maybe the
"package failed to install" is wrong, or it's some minor error like rebuilding
man pages or font cache. KPackageKit's uninformative alert makes it hard to
tell or troubleshoot.
