You need to install the python-pivy package in order to use the 2D drafting tools, that's what the error message on the status bar says if I remember well. Unfortunately the python-pivy version from Lucid repository is buggy, so you'd better download and install manually this version from debian: http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/python-pivy It's the exact same version, but without the lucid bug, so it's safe to install. Those errors in the self-test happen sometime, and shouldn't prevent you from running freecad normally...
