I booted using the Edgy Knot 1 CD and had the same problem. However I looked at the partition list and saw what was wrong: There is a zero length partition (partition 7) that overlaps with another partition (number 6). I deleted partition 7 and it solved the problem.
It looks like parted needs better error recovery, so that it can be used to solve this kind of problem.
