As a workaround (or a complete solution?), is there any way to change the signal from a "lid closing" event so that the system receives a pure fn-f1 key-stroke combination (either by changing the lid-closing signal that is generated at the source or by intercepting and changing it before it gets to its destination)? Once the system gets a pure fn-f1 from lid closing, presumably it would wake up with the back-light on as if the user had pressed an fn-f1 on the keyboard. Just an idea.
