Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

Hello,

since upgrading from 10.04 lucid to 10.10 maverick, there are still power
management issues even after finding workarounds for the most apparent problems
(see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/660152
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/660297
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/660301
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/663105 )

The remaining problem is the following: if I press suspend or hibernate
by a laptop button or the gnome menu, in most cases the desired state is
entered by the machine, but on resume all I get is a text mode screen
with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. I still can switch the
termninal in this case, but the system is locked and accepts no further
input - reboot is needed to make it respond again. Switching to X is not
possible, the server does not seem to run. The regularly-used WLAN card
(ath5k) just stays blinking with a kind of "standby" rhythm.

The strange thing here is: if suspend or hibernate is triggered by an
inactivity timeout set by gnome-power-manager (or caused by a low-
battery event), it usually works correctly and the system resumes as
expected!

The behaviour is identical whether I use uswsusp or kernel suspend
control. Manually executing pm-suspend/pm-hibernate or s2ram/s2disk also
results in a non-resumable machine, as described above.

The system seems to be better "prepared" for power save modes if caused
by non-manual events, but why? That's why I assigned the bug to gnome-
power-manager, as it should do the coordination from my point of view -
but it also could be a kernel or Xorg issue, for example.

Best regards,

Hans-Juergen Mauser

maverick: suspend / hibernate work only corrently by timeout or low battery
events, but not on request (button or menu) - resuming then fails (might also
be kernel or xorg issue)
