Happened on my fresh up-to-date x86 install as well. I changed sources in kpackagekit (through "edit origins") to find out if it happens only when there are updates available. Instead of crashing turning some sources off and than back on (with restarts in between) solved the problem and notifier works again. This solved the same crash on other install as well.
It took me two days and and 2 testing installs to solve.
