why did you use qparted if it was only an upgrade? apt-get dist-upgrade
should not touch your hard disks.I don't see a bug here.

the average user won't need a disk paritioner after installation. I
think it is ok, if it has to be installed separately.

there is a powerful infrastructure that ensures the success of the
upgrade. so please use update-manager instead of a "dump" apt-get dist-
upgrade.

the uuid is used to detect the correct partition after adding, remvoing
or swapping hard disks.

we have got graphical alternatives to apt-get to install applications:
add/remove applications or synaptic.
